You might need to interview several agents in order to get a feel for personalities and services, but there are some important attributes that you need to consider.
Honesty and Integrity: Do you trust your agent to represent you to the best of his/her ability? A licensed REALTOR® (a member of the National Association of REALTORS®) is bound to a high standard of integrity and a Code of Ethics).
Familiarity With the Area: Does your REALTOR® know local market trends, neighborhoods, and availabilities?
Work Ethic: Is your REALTOR® willing to work with you evenings and weekends? Does he/she communicate with you in a timely manner? Does your agent have such a high volume of business that he/she is not able to give you the attention you deserve? Does your REALTOR® adhere to deadlines to make sure your transaction closes on time? Is your agent willing to go the extra mile to ensure your satisfaction? Does he/she come to meetings and showings prepared and organized?
Knowledge of Resources: Is your agent able to provide a list of resources you will need during your transaction? (inspectors, electricians, plumbers, surveyors, painters, septic services, HVAC companies, etc.) Does your REALTOR® read articles, listen to podcasts, or take classes in order to stay abreast of current information?
Relationships: Does your REALTOR® have a good working relationship with other agents, lenders, inspectors, closing attorneys, and other professionals?
Problem-solving: Is your agent able to offer reasonable alternatives and solutions if problems arise?
